Details

Changes is the fourth story show created by Chicago Tap Theatre. Featuring the music of rock innovator David Bowie, Changes will run for four full weekends in the intimate Athenaeum Theatre Studio 3, which holds a maximum of 90 people. The story of Changes is grounded in science fiction, with the starting point being Bowie's seminal work Ground Control to Major Tom. From there the story moves to an alien planet ruled by an egotistical leader who forces the populace to work for his own glorification.

Unlike some dance works, which count on the audience to apply their own meaning to what can seem quite abstract at times, CTT strives to present fairly clear narratives while still leaving some room for the audience to interpret. By presenting multi-week runs in a small space, Chicago Tap Theatre continues to break the boundaries of performance dance. The raw, visceral power of Yonally's choreography communicates itself to audience members not only through their eyes and ears, but right up through their seats. Changes is yet another example of how Yonally and his company of sensual, intelligent dancers are changing the face of American dance.

Changes: A Science Fiction Tap Opera runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday, July 7, 8, 9, 14, 15, 16, 21, 22, 23 and 28, 29, 30 at the Athenaeum Theater Studio 3. All Friday and Saturday shows begin at 8 P.M., all Sunday shows are at 3 P.M. Tickets can either be purchased at the door or through www.ticketmaster.com or by calling 312-902-1500. Tickets are $25 for Adults, $20 for Seniors and $15 for Students or Dancers. Discounts are also available for groups of 15 or more. "The dancing itself is straightforwardly satisfying, underlining, or playing off the music's rhythms while providing the story's details and emotion. And its thunderous reverberations, especially when all or most of the 11 cast members are performing, magnify the saga, giving it an operatic scope."
